If you’re a fan of Chanel, then I’m sure you’ve heard of the infamous Chanel Hula Hoop handbag. Wow – I never thought I would use those two nouns consecutively, let alone in the same sentence (Chanel and Hula Hoop).
Chanel debuted this work of art at Paris Fashion Week a few months back. However, they are currently in the Chanel boutiques, so being the handbag lover that I am, I had to write a post about it.
My first impression: Confused and at a loss for words.
Is Chanel following in the footsteps of McQueen? And by McQueen, I’m referring to the one and only ECCENTRIC Alexander.
Thankfully, the mind behind the madness cleared up my mix of emotions:
The head designer of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, specifically said,
“It’s for the beach. You need space for the beach towel. And then you can put it into the sand and hang things on it.”
Of course that makes sense!!!!! The reason people don’t usually take their quilted Chanel 2.55 handbags to the beach is because they are too small to hold a towel. Why didn’t I think of this brilliant and practical idea? Sarcasm, folks.
He also said
“It’s all about volume and lightness, which normally don’t go together.”
The volume he was referring to is the bag’s size, and the lightness was referring to the handles made of hula hoop tubing. So this “fashion statement” achieved the perfect balance of opposites!
Would you see me rockin’ it? More like – would you see the bag rockin’ me? It’s almost bigger than I am! Don’t get me wrong … it would be my pleasure. Chanel sporting me would be a dream come true! Seriously speaking though, I would totally invest in the white mini Hula hoop Chanel ($2,400) … but you wouldn’t find me at the beach with it!
